"From scratch" is generally not a good idea, unless; 1. Research & Educational purposes. 2. Creation of a Product for sale. 3. An OSS product.
Most usage patterns that one can possibly "build from scratch" are already supported by Merlin, or can be made to do so with a lot less effort.
