You should be able to do
ns.xpath("/soapenv:Envelope/soapenv:Body/ns1:getItemsResponse/ns1:out/ns1:totalRecordsAvailable",
Integer.class)
or
ns.xpath("/soapenv:Envelope/soapenv:Body/ns1:getItemsResponse/ns1:out/ns1:totalRecordsAvailable/text()",
Integer.class)

Doesn't it work for you?
