I'm going to step in and answer my own question. The problem turned out to be unrelated to JMX. Unbeknownst to me, I had assigned the from endpoint to a non-producer which seems to be the root of the problem. When I reconfigured my test route to use a different (and valid as a producer) endpoint then everything worked as expected.
