It is true - after I cleared away support XML jars, the projects compiled & I can run them properly. The root cause of the issue appears to be JDK 1.6 conflicting with xerces libs, perhaps jaxb impl/api as well. In future, I must keep an eye on which projects require supplemental XML libraries; and, it will be interesting to see if this XML libs continue to conflict in JDK 7+.
