According to http://cloudstack.apache.org/docs/en-US/Apache_CloudStack/4.2.1/html-single/Release_Notes/index.html#upgrade-from-3.0.x-to-4.2.1, you don’t require to remove and add the KVM host back again. Only a package upgrade and some settings update to environment.properties should suffice.
