For example you could load-balance between instances in different clouds. What I believe people do is that they automate their instance/application provisioning so that they can deploy instantly in their cloud of choice, coupled with things like load balancing and global DNS you have very resilient apps across clouds and geos. You might consider cold migration among clouds as a re-provisioning of an instance.
