which comes as a surprise to us unix hackers. The concept behind env-variables is in

which is the OSX way to do things - which is insanely helpful for non-terminal
sort of double clicking on a 'jar' and expecting it to be fine :-)
Also note that apple makes very effecitve use of the symlinks in (System|~|)/Library/Java/Home;
