OK, so is someone working on how to get the HTMLcleaner part of Cocoon - or it already part of Cocoon as useable now (if so... are there instructions?) and will it achieve the same end... create "clean" XML from the htmlArea strings that can be saved to an XML file (instead of the current < and > et al)?

It is very configurable through an XML file. It also cleans up the code. Ugo's HTMLparser works similar but only parses the code into a DOM-tree.
