It's a dedicated place for the bootloader, outside of any partition. You can rewrite the MBR while being booted off the same disk.

Unless you copy the contents into a hard disk partition, obviously not.

One solution in your situation is to use an emulator for installation: Run the thing with the install disk image attached as well as the real hard disk. OSX86 folks do their installations this way and the VMware emulator is known to work. Not sure about qemu's ability to mount real hard disks; DragonFly runs fine there.
