I see the PR in question suggests something similar for xine - with similar misgivings from you about potential breakage. A quick test reveals that /dev/dsp on DragonFly does not respond well to cating an au file to it which a sun audio device should take so /dev/dsp on DragonFly is not suitable for use as a real /dev/audio.
