If you run it from the command line, do you get warnings about not being able
to contact dbus? I had the same problem and never did figure out how to fix
it (I went back to kwrite/kate).

I do get warnings about dbus not able to contact either due to
misconfigured dbus,etc. I think will also switch to kwrite/kate, if it
works for me. However
I was not able to find kwrite/kate in pkgsrc. is it part of another
src within pkgsrc?
