So I was using jdk 1.6.0_29 then upgraded to 1.6.0_31, this did not help anything. Next I upgraded my jdk to 1.7.0_03 and the I was able to authenticate successfully. I did not try the Authenticator.setDefault implementation, however I am able to authenticate with jdk 1.7 installed.
