Hello again Willem,
I had a few minutes free, so I put together a quick example of a very
simple form that does most of what you ask. You can download the ODB
file as
http://www.paintedfrogceramics.com/OpenOffice/eventKeeper/eventKeeper.odb
I Hope this helps get you started on your solution.
I don't think, that this form is a solution. If I understand Willem
correct, than he want to see the information and the picture of the
visitor before EventID and VisitorID are entered in the
Event_2_Visitor table. This is not possible with the form
EventAttendees, because the subform does not already show the datas when
the visitor is selected, but only when the new entry for Event_2_Visitor
has been written to the table.
I stumbled over that problem some days before, see thread "form for n:m
relation".
To everyone,
I am also hoping that this small database might stimulate a little more
discussion on this list - specifically regarding the usability of Base's
inferface for this kind of application. The example database that I put
up for download took, literally, 20 minutes for me to create. ( create
the tables, create a form to populate some images, create the
eventAttendees form ) Yet I would contend that there is a sizable user
group that would be totally baffeled as to how to approach this, and
that there are simple things that could be changed in Base that would
help change this.
The question really is this : Is it the interface or the documentation,
or a combination of both.
The documentation has been terrible, a mix of version 1 and 2. The
interface isn't better. The wizard do not help me in my first tries.
I don't like wizards. They do thinks for me, without explaining it. I
will not be able to change something afterwards (like the report
wizard). I would prefer a kind of tutor, who leads me and explains
thinks, so that after a while I can do it without tutor.
So, if anyone would like - download the file, take a look at the form.
Ask youself a question. If you didn't know much about database's in
general and Base spricifically - in other words if you leaned heavily on
the wizards to get things done - would you be able to reproduce this
form? If not - is there some way Base could be enahnced to make it so?
Yes, there should be tutorials with little example database files, which
focus on one problem. The tutorials can be online, they need not to be
in the online help. So when I have a question like "How set up a form
for the connection table of a n:m relationship?", I will find a suitable
example. Or for this question, "How can I get a picture into my
database?" You will find nothing in the help and the wizard will not
help you.
kind regards
Regina
