I fear you ran into http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=9899. In fact there is no possibility to *force* all open connections to a spreadsheet to be closed, nor can you force an existing connection to refresh its data. That's a sad, long-lasting limitation of the Spreadhseet driver.
