OK - before I go on here a quick aside...I just thought some might
find this amusing - nothing more - I am not meaning to open any can
of worms, cause I don't think one exists!

I received an email yesterday from one of my TeachingDays users. ( a
Base database )

He had a couple of questions, Would I be porting the TeachingDays
database to the new OOo database module? Would OpenOffice be
supporting both Base and Kexi????

OK, now that is where I said - huh - KEXI? Now how would he get that idea?

Turns out it is quite easy to get this impression - Kexi comes from
OpenOffice.pl, in fact they bundle it with their OpenOffice Pro
package ( I think that is the name ). It also comes as part of
Koffice.

Under WinXP if one installs the Kexi 2007 package the installer
displays an OpenOffice Poland logo quite prominently.

So therein lays my users confusion. It sure looks like it has
something to do with OpenOffice.

Best regards,

Drew

ps - About porting TeachingDays to Kexi - well, after playing with the
package for a number of hours I don't think that is a possability. My
database uses a few forms with sub-forms and it appears that Kexi does
not have that capability just yet.

On the other hand some of their data controls are quite nice.

pps - I am also looking at gathering some rough metrics for
performance of the two packages ( embedded HSQLdb vs SQLlite in other
words ) - unfortunately I will be limited to doing this under Kubuntu
64 only as the WinXP Kexi does not handle enough data to make it worth
the effort...arrgh.

ppps - One final note - Having setup Kubuntu 6.10 to dual boot on my
AMD machine with XP I am totally enamored with the performance of Base
2.0.4 ubuntu4 - it took a bit to get it to work properly ( still
crashes hard with some wizards, but all else seems to work ) the
larger the database the more the difference - for example my Baseball
database, as an embedded file, which I use to torture test Base
releases ( 44 Megs of data, some joins returning in excess of 123K
rows ) will bring XP to its knees - under Kubuntu 64 it outperforms a
HSQLdb server under XP and NO out of memory errors that are common
under XP.

I have also setup up an Intel 2.0 ghz machine to run Ubuntu 6.10 (32
bit) but have not tested the Basebasll database on it YET. Also, I
suppose one can get Kexi to run under Gnome, but not sure about that.
