Dear Team!

Can you please tell me, if there are planes for a new release of Apache
Directory in the future?

Yes, definitively.

So far I did not find any better software to manage LDAP directories by far
(especially on MacOS/Linux), but there are some known errors which I believe
could be fixed.

Indeed. Typically, if you want to use TLS 1.3, you'd better use 2.0.0-M16, not the latest (M17).

I would even consider paying a license fee, if the development of Studio will
continue ….

This was, is and will remain free. If you consider a donation, please check https://donate.apache.org/. Targeted donation aren't allowed.

I found one comment on the internet referring to the fact there are
dependencies to JAVA 8 wich are blocking further development - is this true?

No, as we already require Java 11 to be used (https://github.com/apache/directory-studio/blob/master/README.md).

At some point, we will most certainly move up to a more recent Java version however.

Some more insight:

Apache Directory Studio depends on two components:

- Apache Directory Server which also depends on :

- Apache LDAP API

Both depend on Apache MINA, which had a big issue (TLS 1.3) that has been fixed lately (hopefully). But we also have started some big refactoring in Apache LDAP API so that it can be built with more recent Java version (namely, it depends on Antlr 2.7 which is not compatible with java 21 for instance). We are close to be done with this refactoring, so as soon a LDAP API has been released, we will be able to release Directory Server then Studio.

However, it takes time, and we have litlle...

In any case, you you have difficulties with Studio, do not hesitate to fill an issue, on :

* https://github.com/apache/directory-studio/blob/master/README.md

You will need to create a user, and we will grant it.

Thanks!

Kind regards

Thorsten
