Once I do that, what else do I have to do? Do I have to put something in

Check output of "locale".

I put "en_US.UTF-8" in /etc/login.conf, logged in on a VT, ran locale, and found LANG set to "en-US.UTF-8". What gives?

I manually set LANG to "en_US.UTF-8" in a konsole, opened the Bezitopo source in kate, and found that all the files are displayed in ISO-8859-1. What else do I have to set? There are degree signs and other non-ASCII characters in comments, all encoded in UTF-8.

There is no mention of UTF in /etc/profile , ~/.profile , or any other configuration file in my home directory that I could think of.
