Ok. It wasn't quite the intended behavior but I don't think it hurts anything. The system is probing the drive every so often looking for media. The AHCI driver got a little more verbose on reporting error conditions, but this particular error condition is actually expected when there is no CD/DVD in the drive. I'll look into 'quieting' the message for the CD/DVD probe when I have a bit of free time.
