Hi Sten, yes, Karaf does have an improved shell as those enhancements have been declined in the past. But if you want to have a much more minimal approach, did you try out the minimal distribution of Karaf. Or even better did you try to create a custom Karaf based on this? In the end based on Karaf 4 you can minimise the Karaf distribution down to the real basics.
