Via the dataTipFunction and setting showDataTips to true, and just including the no of points as one of the bits of information in the data tip. Also tried to colour code based on point density but it didn't work as well for our users but that may also work for you. Also got the mouse zooming working by selecting an area and then having a context menu to zoom to fit the drawn area or select the points but can't recall if that was straight forward to code or not - was a while ago.
