I was once in a similar situation and did the following trick on the
label's updateComplete event -

if(myLabel.isTruncated){
myLabel.setStyle("fontSize", myLabel.getStyle("fontSize") - 2);
}

Of course you would need to also set the value for maxDisplayedLines.
