Hi, (Little embarrassed...) I'm sorry for the noise, but I have found the problem. I should have done the installation of the drivers more carefully.
When I installed the drivers for the printer the ppd wasn't actually made visible to CUPS. So I could never select the correct driver when adding the printer in CUPS, only gutenprint was there. I have now copied the ppd manually. I don't think I'm the only one to blame though. The installation instructions are not correct on avasys pages.
