It's worth posting a bug-report / wish-list item / feature-request about this issue tho! http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport That guide should have a link to help you post a bug-report and put "Wish-list" in the subject-line. It might have a more sophisticated way of posting a feature-request. So, it's your choice.
Until that gets addressed i think you have to keep using your work-around of a dummy character. I usually use a full-stop . but you already use something better.
