I've looked more closely at what happens when installing ver 4 in a non-Program Files folder in my Vistax64 with ver 3 already installed in Program Files. Ver 3 files (sans soffice.exe and other executables) are backed up to Roaming\LibreOffice\3 while the user-specific files (including executables) for ver 4 are put into ...\4 . Other parts of ver 4 go into the folder I chose during installation. Finally, LO 3 & LO 3 Help are replaced in Control Panel\Programs and Features with LO 4 & LO 4 Help.
So it's a pretty clean upgrade process. Since LO 4 is working as it should, I don't really need to check it against LO 3 as I thought. I discovered how this process works when looking to remove LO 3, which isn't there.
