Hi :) It is good when 2 projects co-operate in this and other ways, as we do. In many ways it's really 1 big community but there are various artificial boundaries trying to split it into 2. At various points, but most noticeably back when Oracle owned OpenOffice, there have been fairly determined efforts to split the community into the 2 separate projects. I get the impression that code developed for LibreOffice then makes it's way into OpenOffice and just lately we seem to have had a major contribution of code from IBM through Apache OpenOffice. It seems that IBM couldn't just give us the code directly but obviously wanted us to have it in the end. Apache worked hard to make that possible and finally gave us the code ready for the 4.2.0. The code solves a huge raft of accessibility issues.
Anyone who can test-drive 4.2.0 would be doing a great job for helping smooth things out more quickly and for helping make it easier for companies and organisations to migrate to LibreOffice, particularly if you are able to test it with screen-readers and other accessibility tools. I think the code contribution removes dependence on Java in that crucial area. Now it seems the only place java is needed is with Base's current internal back-end. The devs are working at swapping the existing internal back-end for something else so hopefully this issue will eventually be resolved too. Individuals such as James and Alex (and others who are keeping quiet about it) who continue to work in both projects get my applause for keeping lines-of-communication open. Articles in on-line magazines and even in more mainstream press get all excited about the apparent feud and competition between the projects. I wonder if they will jump on this type of positive story too! ;) People generally get more excited about feuds and problems so that is what magazines sell/tell Regards from Tom :) On 17 January 2014 08:14, James E Lang <[email protected]> wrote: > I am using LO.
