One of the problems with Microsoft Office is that each different version has a slightly different format so documents created with any one version sometimes don't work properly in any other version. Usually those still work in LibreOffice but not always. The best work-around is to ask the person who sent the document to resend but using the old MS Office 2003/Xp/2000 format, Doc rather than DocX. They should be able to do that by going to; File - "Save As" MS Office 2007 used a golden globe at the top left instead of the "File" menu. Hopefully something there helps!
