There's not a lot of activity on the MQTT plugins (or on any of the external 
plugins), but then again, the same can be said for the dependencies it uses. I 
know these plugins are used in production in a couple of implementations, so I 
guess they're ok. 
There are no license conflicts, so technically we could integrate these plugins 
into the main code base, but that also includes code cleanup, extended and/or 
new unit and integration tests, documentation etc, and the development team 
just hasn't had the bandwidth to do this. 
I don't know of any guidelines and/or sample implementations, only that these 
plugins are actively used. These plugins work more or less similar to the Kafka 
transforms, so you could take a look at those for reference.
