I used to get these and never bothered to track the cause.

Me too - getting tired of it finally.

They've since disappeared (and I didn't notice). The only
appreciable change made was upgrading Samba.

I'm getting this on RH Linux 9 running Samba v 2.2.7a - would you mind telling me which you're running?

Samba 3.0.7.  I find it little hard to believe that a simple
upgrade would affect this.  Some minor Samba conf changes may
also have been made, but I wouldn't remember what they might be.
