I was afraid of that. It sounds like HTTP isn't really the most appropriate protocol for this application, although I understand the desire to reuse existing stuff. Assuming you don't want to go through the hassle of defining a new protocol and implementing an apache protocol module, a possible trick would be to use HTTP/0.9 rather than HTTP/1.x. In other words, send simply GET /yourfile[enter] and you will get a response back with no headers. Of course, I don't know how well tested or maintained HTTP/0.9 support in apache is.
