These type of problems often arise from an inconsistent compilation (eg, apache and mod_perl compiled with different compilers, different libs, under different environments etc.) See http://perl.apache.org/docs/2.0/user/install/install.html#Installing_mod_perl_from_Source and not especially the point that mod_perl must be compiled with the same compiler as the perl distro...
