As mentioned before you can run apache as whatever you choose, but it is preferred to use the distribution standard. Here i would change the permission of the file in question: Change the group of the file in question to the group of the webserver and allow the group to change the file. -> permission 664 That way apache still runs as the default user and the application can continue to work as before.
