ahh, and so it is me who has misunderstood.
After re-reading the mod-rewrite docs and looking back at your example I now 
see how it should work (I think :-)

Sorry for the miscommunication and thanks for the help / patience.

I suppose I'll still put in the feature request, but this works brilliantly for 
now.

Nope, it's still you who missed the point.  The variables available to
mod_rewrite are different than those availble to mod_setenvif.  I've
never tried with mod_setenvif, but mod_rewrite certainly can access
QUERY_STRING and can do anything that mod_setenvif can do, as Krist
demonstrated.
