This may be a long shot, but have you tried getting rid of the trailing slashes? e.g.:

Greetings, Not sure if anyone has seen anything similar to this one ... I have a number of Alias directives in place to allow access to files in a part of the filesystem outside the DocumentRoot. However one of these has mysteriously stopped working and it is produceing 404 errors on the alias under the webroot ... I have checked permissions are still fine on the directory being pointed to, and it is covered by a Directory directing in the upper level apache.conf file. There are no conflicting rewrite rules or redirects that could be in conflict with the Alias directive .... Does anyone have an idea what could be causing this issue?
