Suggest you start by updating that. 2.2.3 is old, and we've
made a number of improvements to the proxy since then.
Once you've done that, we can figure out whether you have

Thank you for the quick reply. I have just updated to Apache 2.2.11
(httpd-2.fc10.x86_64). My problem still exists, with the exact same
symptoms as before.
