Yeah, that was it. Kind of peeved, tho, that even with LogLevel set to
"debug" apache throws absolutely no explanation or error for this.

mod_rewrite shares its thoughts with you through the RewriteLog at RewriteLogLevel (or somesuch). At level 10, it gets quite chatty and tells you what it does and why so.

"Your browser (or proxy) sent a request that this server could not
understand" is meaningless in light of the fact that it was just a
wrong url, esp since not even a packet sniffer could examine the text
of the request after it has been "rewritten".
