This is a bit obscure, but you need to use
"isis.persistor.datanucleus.impl." as a prefix, ie:

isis.persistor.datanucleus.impl.datanucleus.schema.autoCreateTables=true

That's because anything with this prefix is passed through to DN verbatim.

That said, to save you some time, you might want to try the incode
quickstart, [2].  This is basically the same simpleapp, but with security
and some other common modules pre-configured.
