Turning on/off indexing for certain properties of a node

Hi

I have noticed that one can turn on/off indexing for certain properties 
of a node via

http://wiki.apache.org/jackrabbit/IndexingConfiguration

(for jackrabbit 1.4 and higher)

So, if IIUC JCR API does not contain a method like for instance


Node.getProperty("path").index(false)

right?

Was this ever discussed or considered for the API itself?
