Brilliant! I thought I'd tried it with 1.6.0 before posting, but it turns
out that with the latest version, I only got exceptions from my own code
(with 1.5.6, I definitely got exceptions from Jackrabbit, I only noticed the
1.6.0 release when I was googling for solutions). I fixed my own code and
everything works fine now with 1.6.0.
