Hi all,

This is a heads-up to all users of jena-text and jena-spatial indexes.

Starting from today's development snapshots (20170310) of Jena and Fuseki, jena-text and jena-spatial have been upgraded to use Lucene 6.4.1 instead of the rather old version 4.9.1 that was used up to now (see https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/JENA-1250 for details). The upgrade should bring some performance benefits and help further development of new jena-text and jena-spatial features.

However, old indexes are *not* compatible with the new Lucene. Users attempting to use an old index will get an error message.

There is no migration support for old indexes. Instead, users are encouraged to delete the old Lucene index directory and use jena.textindexer (for jena-text) or jena.spatialindexer (for jena-spatial) to rebuild the index from the RDF data.

Also in this update, Solr support has been *removed* from jena-text and jena-spatial due to bitrot, compatibility issues with the new Lucene and general lack of interest and maintenance (see https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/JENA-1301 for details). Users of jena-text or jena-spatial with a Solr index will need to migrate to a Lucene index.

However, a new Elasticsearch implementation for jena-text is currently being developed (see https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/JENA-1305). That may become an alternative for jena-text/Solr users as well.
