Gary,

Here are a few concrete examples from Kafka and Confluent Platform:

JSON (baked into Kafka Connect, not specifically designed for standalone
serialization but they should work for that):
https://github.com/apache/kafka/blob/trunk/connect/json/src/main/java/org/apache/kafka/connect/json/JsonSerializer.java
https://github.com/apache/kafka/blob/trunk/connect/json/src/main/java/org/apache/kafka/connect/json/JsonDeserializer.java

Avro (via Confluent Platform and integrated with the Schema Registry; note
that these have relatively complex inheritance because the support old and
new (de)coders/(de)serializers):
https://github.com/confluentinc/schema-registry/blob/master/avro-serializer/src/main/java/io/confluent/kafka/serializers/KafkaAvroSerializer.java
https://github.com/confluentinc/schema-registry/blob/master/avro-serializer/src/main/java/io/confluent/kafka/serializers/KafkaAvroDeserializer.java

If you have specific questions about how this all works, please ask! We're
happy to explain how to integrate with other serialization formats.
