i have been experiencing the same problem
my smsc wants the data to be packed
as any data with udh is considered as binary so according to them packing is must
u might be experiencing the same problem
according to them the system works fine with nowsms, so a compatibility issue

When I try to send message longer then 160 characters the text in the message gets messed up. If I choose 8-bit data coding its working for Sony Ericsson T300 but not for other phones that I’ve tried (Motorola C550, Nokia 7210 and some more). In my setup, the Kannel gateway is connected to Comverse ISMSC and concatenation parameter is set in the config file of the gateway.
Is there a solution to this? Do I have to set some ‘special’ values for data coding, charset etc.?
