SMS slow to take off, ahh you mean in the US where they adopted a
proprietry system (CDMA) while almost everywhere else adopted GSM. Now
there is GSM appearing in the US and SMS comes as part of it. Of course
it's also only very recently there's been any kind of inter network SMS
interconnects (directly).

SMS has been well established for YEARS in Europe (I sent my first SMS
in around 92 I think, though I was working for Cellnet [now O2] at the
time, which is slightly ahead of the market in general).
