I have personally tested soon to be released Kannel-1.4 on HP-UX, Solaris, AIX, FreeBSD and many Linux distributions; including Debian, which is my primary workstation and development machine. It works almost everywhere. It would be somewhat possible to get it running even on Win32. So don't worry, but you'd better start with a recent and up-to-date distribution to avoid any problems in the first place.
