Hi Rachita

Q1 - I thought it kept on trying, though you can change the timeout value -
it's in the userguide.

Q2 - You can use a store file - look up the variable 'store-file' in the
userguide.

It's worth checking with your operator when this happens - it's possible
that they are stopping you connecting becuase they think you are still
connected and have limited the number of times you can login - I've seen
this happen before.

Regards,

David

Subject: Urgent Connectivity issue

Hello users,

After much digging and searching thru mail-archives I cannot find a concrete
reason and solution behind a connectivity problem that I am facing

We are running an online system and it seems that sometimes our connectivity
with the SMSC fluctuates resulting in requiring a restart of Kannel and loss
of the pending messages causing financial loss.

Following is what we usually get in the gateway.log.

2006-02-24 15:59:09 [2723] [6] ERROR: connect failed
2006-02-24 15:59:09 [2723] [6] ERROR: System error 110: Connection timed out
2006-02-24 15:59:09 [2723] [6] ERROR: error connecting to server `x.x.x.x'
at port `2775'
2006-02-24 15:59:09 [2723] [6] ERROR: SMPP[SMSC]: Couldn't connect to
server.
2006-02-24 15:59:09 [2723] [6] ERROR: SMPP[SMSC]: Couldn't connect to SMS
center (retrying in 10 seconds).

2006-03-08 13:37:51 [2723] [7] ERROR: System error 104: Connection reset by
peer
2006-03-08 13:37:51 [2723] [7] ERROR: SMPP[SMSC]: Couldn't connect to SMS
center (retrying in 10 seconds).

4:2006-03-24 19:08:32 [18497] [7] ERROR: Error reading from fd 27:
5:2006-03-24 19:08:32 [18497] [7] ERROR: System error 104: Connection reset
by peer
6:2006-03-24 19:08:32 [18497] [7] ERROR: SMPP[SMSC]: Couldn't connect to SMS
center (retrying in 10 seconds).

The log says retrying connection in 10 seconds but it tries only 3 times and
then doesn't do anything. So we have to manually keep restarting Kannel till
we get the connectivity up and running. We can however successfully ping the
SMSC IP and also telnet at the desired port at the SMSC.

Can somebody please help me with the following:

How can I change the no. of retries that kannel makes towards SMSC in case
of connection failure?
How can I make sure that the queued messages in the smsbox are not lost when
I have to restart the Kannel to re-establish the connectivity?

This is really getting very critical for us and will appreciate if anybody
can show some light or suggest a solution. If required I can also send my
kannel configuration file.

Thanks in advance,
Rachita
