For the record, we are now using the Clickatell HTTP driver on production and it works like a charm. We are not stressing it a lot yet, but we will in the future and so far we have no issues with it. We are using to complement our premium number in Spain.

I think the best way to answer this question is to redirect you to the source code. The Clickatell API code is located in smsc/smsc_http.c. There is also other HTTP based SMSC's in there. You can look at them for an example.
