I installed kannel as a standard user without trouble, and it ran just well (bearerbox + smsbox + wapbox). The problem here is mbuni can't find kannel lib because it's not in the usual directory. The reason is you made a mistake in your configure line : you have to tell configure where to find it using the --with-kannel-dir option.

Just try
./configure --prefix=/home/myaccount/mbuni --with-kannel-dir=/home/myaccount/mbuni
