Howevever, I've never really done much with SQL. I was just going to
do manually setup the database and have manual SQL calls instead of
using a layer like propel. It's not going to be a particular complex
database. However, do you think this is a bad idea?

I'm usually of the opinion that one should have a bit of experience of
doing the 'low level' stuff for simple things before learning a higher
level layer for more complex tasks, just to have an idea of what is
going on behind the scenes. I even tried to learn assembly language
once... but I have to say I got a bit bored, so there is a limit!
