When that happened to me, I asked myself why and realized that I didn't
have enough RAM, or a fast enough chip for today's systems. As it
happened, I had enough spare cash for an upgrade, and am still running
Xfce with Compiz. (Gnome 3 doesn't play nice with Compiz, although
Gnome 2 did.)
