I assume that the error is not a good-thing. Also, curiously, when I switch to graphical mode ln -sf /lib/systemd/system/graphical.target /etc/systemd/system/default.target and then reboot.... hoping to get the graphicial login ... just to see if I can pick the desktop there... after the reboot the system has been set back to the multi-user.target Thanks Richard
