That may well depend on what *you* mean by "washed out." To me, looking at some people's computers with the LCD screen running at the wrong resolution, they look "blurred and smudgy." LCDs only work well at one resolution, 1:1 driving of screen pixels with graphics card pixels. A 2:1 (half resolution) can work, but some displays smooth out the edges of everything into a smudge, rather than simply show two pixels instead of one.
